Microsoft moves closer to completing $69 billion Activision takeover after court rebuffs regulators

A U.S. appeals court has rejected a bid by federal regulators to block Microsoft from closing its $68.7 billion deal to buy video game maker Activision Blizzard A U.S. appeals court on Friday rejected a bid by federal regulators to block Microsoft from closing its $68.7 billion deal to buy video game maker Activision Blizzard, paving the way for the completion of the biggest acquisition in tech history after a legal battle over whether it will undermine competition. In a brief ruling, a three-judge panel on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded there were no grounds for issuing an order that would have prevented Microsoft from completing its nearly 18-month-old deal to take over the maker of popular video games such as Call of Duty. The Redmond, Washington, software maker is facing a potential $3 billion termination fee if the deal isn't completed by Tuesday. “This brings us another step closer to the finish line in this marathon of global regulatory reviews,” Microsoft P...

Tesla lawyers want court to reconsider Musk tweet deemed 'threat' amid labor dispute

Lawyers for Tesla have asked a federal appeals court to reconsider a ruling that CEO Elon Musk unlawfully threatened employees with a loss of stock options in a 2018 Twitter post NEW ORLEANS -- Lawyers for Tesla have asked a federal appeals court to reconsider its ruling that CEO Elon Musk unlawfully threat ened employees with a loss of stock options in a 2018 Twitter post amid a union organizing effort. Three judges on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, in a March ruling, upheld a National Labor Relations Board order that the tweet be deleted. The panel also upheld an order that a fired Tesla employee be rehired with back pay. The case arose from United Auto Workers’ organizing efforts at a Tesla facility in Fremont, California. Tesla attorneys want the full 17-member court to rehear the case. The panel ruling, they argue in a Monday evening filing, co NFL icts with Supreme Court and appellate court precedents regarding First Amendment free speech protections. A...

High court temporarily blocks restrictions on abortion pill

The Supreme Court has temporarily kept in place federal rules for use of an abortion drug, while it more fully considers the issues raised in a court challenge WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court said Friday it was temporarily keeping in place federal rules for use of an abortion drug, while it takes time to more fully consider the issues raised in a court challenge. In an order signed by Justice Samuel Alito, the court asked both sides to weigh in by Tuesday over whether lower court rulings restricting the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug, mifepristone, should be allowed to take effect while the case works its way through federal courts. The order expires late Wednesday, suggesting the court will decide that issue by then. The justices are being asked at this point only to determine what parts of an April 7 ruling by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Texas, as modified by an appellate ruling Wednesday, can be in force while the case continues. The court finds its...

The Florida Supreme Court will convene a grand jury at Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' request to investigate any wrongdoing with respect to the COVID-19 vaccines TALLAHASSEE -- The Florida Supreme Court will convene a grand jury at Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ request to investigate any wrongdoing with respect to the COVID-19 vaccine s, the court announced Thursday. The Republican governor, who is often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2024, earlier this month called for the investigation. He suggested it would be in part aimed to jog loose more information from pharmaceutical companies about the vaccine s and potential side effects. Vaccine studies funded by pharmaceutical companies that developed COVID-19 vaccine s have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, and government panels reviewed data on the safety and effectiveness of the shots before approving them for use. DeSantis' request argues that phar...
